Information Provided by the Police Department

A Message from the Chief
En Español

The Phoenix Police Department cares about what you think of the kind of service it provides to the community. Information provided by you helps the department deliver the best possible police service to the citizens of Phoenix. Your input will be used to help shape programs, priorities, training, and discipline so that we may continue to live up to our nationally recognized reputation for excellence.

Our policy is to forward commendations and investigate any complaints we receive. That includes information received from people directly involved in an incident, witnesses, friends, or relatives of those involved and from community groups like the City of Phoenix Human Relations Commission, the NAACP, Chicanos por la Causa, Friendly House, or any other group or organization with whom you feel comfortable. If you have a comment or complaint, you may report it to us in person, by letter or by telephone. You need not give us your name, but we encourage you to do so because we may need to talk to you to get additional information about the incident. If you feel strongly about the Department’s performance, positively or negatively, let us know.

Jack F. Harris
Police Chief

How to Commend a Police Employee

When you have experienced service from our department you feel is worthy of commendation, we would like to hear about it. At the bottom of this page is a link to a form you may fill out and submit to let our employee know that what he or she did is appreciated. Or, you may call the Police Chief’s Office at 602-262-6747. Please include all the details you can remember such as the employee’s name, the date, time and the circumstances of the incident.

How Should You File a Complaint?

You should immediately bring your complaint to the attention of the Department by either requesting a supervisor at the scene of the incident or by calling the police non-emergency telephone number at 602-262-6151. A police supervisor will be notified of the complaint and you will be contacted as soon as possible.

During daytime hours, complaints may be directed to the Police Chief’s Office (602-262-6747) or to the Professional Standards Bureau (602-262-4580). Or, at the bottom of this page is a form you may fill out and submit with your complaint. Include all details you remember, such as the employees’s name, the date, time and circumstances of the incident.

How Will Your Complaint Be Investigated?

Once the complaint is received, you will receive a letter acknowledging the complaint and confirming it is being investigated. You will also be notified, by letter, of the results of the investigation.

Your case will be assigned to an investigator who will be a police supervisor. During the investigation, you, the employee and all witnesses will be interviewed. Where appropriate, physical evidence will be examined and photographs taken, if needed.

If the complaint is valid, appropriate action will be taken. In cases of serious misconduct, the investigation will be reviewed by a Disciplinary Review Board comprised of citizens, peer employees and police commanders. This board recommends appropriate action to the Police Chief, who makes the final determination.

What if You Are Not Satisfied With the Results of the Investigation?

The Department hopes that this will not happen. However, you may contact
any of the following offices.
