The Neighborhood Services Department’s “Blight Busters Volunteer Program” begins a new training session 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 3325 W. Flower St. (north of Thomas Rd.).
Recent city budget cuts have resulted in a 20-percent reduction in staffing and funding to support graffiti removal. The “Blight Busters Volunteer Program” was created to train community volunteers to help support graffiti removal and other blight issues in Phoenix neighborhoods.
Program participants will attend two training modules, on Tuesday, Feb. 23 and March 2, and a two-hour class offered on Saturday, Feb. 20 or Feb. 27, 8 – 11:30 a.m. Volunteers will learn how to use an airless paint sprayer for graffiti abatement; techniques to avoid conflicts; how to address illegal signs in the right of way; use of GPS cameras and other tools and information to keep our neighborhoods clean and safe.
Each graduate is committed to providing eight hours of volunteer service each month. For more information, visit phoenix.gov/NSD or contact William Hogans at 602-534-6696.
