Major construction has ended on the First Street Streetscape Improvement Project, located between Fillmore and McKinley streets in Downtown Phoenix.  The six-month project was funded by the 2006 City of Phoenix Bond Program.

The new pedestrian corridor is an amenity for the neighborhood and those visiting the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus, the Phoenix Public Market and businesses such as The Breadfruit, The Turf Irish Pub, Sens and others along First Street.  Additionally, street parking is now available close to businesses.

In addition to roadway narrowing, the project includes pedestrian enhancements such as wider sidewalks, with ADA access ramps, pedestrian lighting, bicycle racks, benches, and an urban forest of pistache trees, willow acacias and ground cover to shade and cool the area.

Unique features include trees planted in structural soil to promote root growth and pervious pavers near planters that allow rainfall to pass through to the soil.  A 60-year-old storm drain system and water main were replaced as part of the project. 

City of Phoenix Bond Program funds, approved by voters, are for major capital improvement projects and may not be used for operation and maintenance expenditures.
