Greener Neighborhoods

HOPE VI Project 14hopevi.jpgThe goals of Greener Neighborhoods are to rehabilitate distressed homes for water and energy efficiency, increase housing affordability, stimulate the housing market, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and train workers. The plan builds on the success of several existing city programs managed by the Housing and Neighborhood Services department that provide energy efficient home construction, housing modernization, affordable housing, housing weatherization, rental rehabilitation and control of lead hazards.

Phoenix has received funding for programs that meet the goals of the Greener Neighborhood plan from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The following are a few examples:

    • $1.7 million to Green Retrofit Sunnyslope Manor – the Phoenix Housing Department will make 116 assisted housing units more energy efficient. Sunnyslope Manaer is a Section 8 property for seniors.
    • $3.4 million to Green-Retrofit Public Housing -- Phoenix Housing Department will green retrofit 374 units at Marcos de Niza, 305 W. Pima St. Retrofits include adding geothermal/ground coupled heat pumps, xeriscape landscaping, low-flow water fixtures and photovoltaic collectors.
