FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q Is there a detective assigned to my case?

A You should have been given an Accident Information Exchange Form by the patrol officer who investigated your accident. On that form is a box in the middle marked, “For Police Use Only.” In that box it will state, “Hit and Run report taken?” with an area to check “Yes” or “No.” If the “Yes” box is checked, a departmental report was taken and will be forwarded to the Vehicular Crimes Unit for follow up investigation. If the “No” box is checked, the officer found a lack of evidence to warrant a departmental report. In that case, only an Accident Report was completed and there is no follow up investigation to be done on your case.

Q Does the car that hit mine have insurance?

A The license plate of the suspect vehicle is your key to identifying the registered owner and insurance information. Unless the patrol officer was able to provide you with insurance information at the time of the accident, the Phoenix Police Department is unable to provide you with any insurance information. In order to obtain insurance information, you need to contact the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division (Arizona MVD). Arizona MVD can be reached by calling (602) 255-0072, pressing “4”, then pressing “1”, and asking to speak to a “Level 2 Operator.” By completing an affidavit and submitting a copy of your Accident Report to MVD, they will be able to provide you with any insurance information on that vehicle. You must have the license plate number of the suspect vehicle in order to obtain any information from Arizona MVD.

Q How do I know if anyone has been caught by the police?

A Either the patrol officer investigating the accident will advise you at that time if someone was apprehended, or if at a later date someone has been cited for the hit and run, you will be notified by the police department.

Q Who owns the car that hit mine?

A Again, the license plate of the suspect vehicle is your key to identifying the registered owner and insurance information. As with insurance information, unless the patrol officer was able to provide you with registration information at the time of the accident, the Phoenix Police Department is unable to provide you with any registration information over the phone. You can either request a copy of your Accident Report from Traffic Records by calling (602) 534-1127 and the registration information should be listed on the Accident Report. Another way to obtain registration information is through Arizona MVD by calling (602) 255-0072, pressing “4”, then pressing “1”, and asking to speak to a “Level 2 Operator.” You must have the license plate number of the suspect vehicle in order to obtain any information from Arizona MVD.

Q If someone is caught, will they be made to pay for damages to my car?

A The criminal investigation process does nothing to repair the damage to your vehicle or refund your deductible if you filed a claim with your insurance carrier. The civil process involving the recovery of damages (money) caused by another person does not involve the police, but rather the civil courts (such as a Justice of the Peace). Many people contact their insurance carrier at the beginning of this process for assistance and/or advice. If there is valid insurance on the suspect vehicle, you can then submit your claim to the registered owner’s insurance company for any restitution. If, however, there is no valid insurance on the vehicle, you must then file a small claims lawsuit against the registered owner. You can then contact a Justice of the Peace office and they will assist you in filing your small claims lawsuit.

Q How do I get a copy of my report?

A Copies of your Accident Report and/or Departmental Report can be obtained by contacting Phoenix Police Department, Public Records Section, at (602) 534-1127. To obtain a copy in person the cost is a minimum of $3.00. If you would only like a copy of your Accident Report you can do so at no cost through the internet at www.phoenix.gov, and then click on e-services.
