"We're All On The Same Team"
Cultural Diversity Program

Background
"We're All On The Same Team" is a citywide campaign born out of the realization that as Phoenix grows in its diversity, we must embrace our differences and come together as a team. This grass roots effort, developed by the Phoenix Human Relations Commission and community leaders, strives to create an environment that is respectful and inclusive of everyone within our city. The commission recognizes that if Phoenix is to grow to its fullest potential, it will be through the efforts of all citizens. "We're All on the Same Team" is learning, growing and working together.

Community Outreach and Education

"We're All On The Same Team" Hotline - 602-495-2485
Local residents have access to up-to-date information about diversity initiatives, upcoming events and diversity training workshops in the city and community through the "We're All on the Same Team" hotline. Brochures and other promotional materials also can be obtained through the hotline staffed by the city Equal Opportunity Department and community volunteers.

City Department Initiatives and Outreach
As the fifth-largest city in the country, the city of Phoenix is dedicated to making the community a better place to live and work. City departments promote and participate in the "We're All On The Same Team" program by training employees on cultural diversity, developing initiatives that encourage community awareness of diversity issues, distributing information on the "We're All On The Same Team" program, displaying the "We're All On The Same Team" banner at community events and keeping diversity at the forefront by delivering services to the community.

"Diversity Dialogue" Newsletter
This newsletter serves as a vital tool to provide cutting-edge information to the community on diversity issues that have local and global implications. Communication between citizens, schools, local businesses, the Human Relations Commission and government is key to the success of this program. It serves as a vehicle to increase communication on events, legislation, reports and successes or challenges in cultural diversity.

Publicity Materials
A colorful brochure, designed by one of our city of Phoenix certified woman-owned businesses, provides a compelling visual image of the "We're All On The Same Team" concept targeting specific groups within the community (i.e., schools, government, businesses and religious groups). Posters, buttons, brochures and accompanying inserts are distributed to encourage citizens and organizations to adopt key principles of diversity. A "We're All On The Same Team" banner is available for use at community events by city departments, local businesses and community groups. The banner is a visual display used to further the "We're All On The Same Team" message and includes the names of corporate sponsors. The banner artwork is identical to the brochure and poster for enhanced program recognition.

Public Service Announcement
This 30-second television PSA, produced by the commission in cooperation with SRO Communications, educates and motivates citizens to move beyond race as the basis for communications. The PSA affirms the messages of accepting differences and tolerance for all members of the community and airs on local television stations.

Cultural Diversity Awareness

Cultural Diversity Awareness Program
This unique training video and curriculum blends the essential aspects of cultural communication, awareness and race relations into a two-hour program unparalleled in recent local efforts. Nationally recognized cultural diversity trainer, Sergeant Gerald Heuett of the Phoenix Police Department, is featured in the free public education program. This training program educates participants on the historical perspective of race relations, cultural communications and other diversity issues. Regular "Train the Trainers" seminars teach volunteers how to present this material to others in the community.

Faces of Diversity Brown Bag Lunch Series Presentations
Once a month, the brown bag series features a speaker or a performance depicting the rich cultural diversity within our community. A sculptor and arist, dance groups, speakers on Asian heritage, black history, Native American history, Sikh identity and various other cultural topics have been featured. The presentations are held in the Phoenix City Council Chambers located at 200 W. Jefferson St. from noon to 1 p.m. They are taped for broadcast by PHX 11. To view PHX 11 program schedule, go to phoenix.gov/11.

Video Library
The Equal Opportunity Department maintains a small video library consisting of taped Faces of Diversity brown bag presentations and other diversity tapes. Organizations are encouraged to borrow these tapes for viewing by their members for a designated period.
