The city of Phoenix is the recipient of an additional $100,000 in grant funding by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which extends the program through March 31, 2000. Limited funds are available for program participants to use for Phase I Environmental Site Assessments.

Brownfields Listings
Program representatives are working with various city departments and other governmental agencies to develop a Brownfields Sites Inventory database listing environmentally impaired vacant and abandoned or under-used land. After the sites have been identified, the property owners will be contacted and offered assistance through the program. Those who agree to participate, will be listed on the database.

Project Profile
The Peoria Avenue Project consists of a 12-acre property located at the northeast corner of 22nd and Peoria avenues. The discovery of groundwater contamination and asbestos materials in the building hindered redevelopment of the property.To date, asbestos-containing materials have been removed and groundwater cleanup continues. The buildings and property are being upgraded significantly. The property has been marketed to the business community as an immediate solution for a back-office type user.
Through the Brownfields Land Recycling Program, the city has supported Remediation Financial, Inc. in this project. RFI is a leading enterprise specializing in the acquisition of industrial and commercial real estate property portfolios that are dormant and stagnating in environmental limbo.
